Roblox Strengthens Safety Efforts Amid Community Concerns

A representative from Roblox shared with NBC News that the company is dedicated to creating a secure and suitable environment for users of all ages. The spokesperson pointed out that criticisms of Roblox often fail to consider their proactive safety measures. These measures are designed to pioneer new standards in online security.

Roblox’s age verification strategy has sparked debate. This system, managed by third-party vendor Persona, claims to delete biometric data immediately post-verification. However, some question its accuracy and raised concerns about user privacy. Users have found methods to bypass age verification, leading to further scrutiny.

Globally, age estimation tools are gaining popularity as social platforms face criticism for inadequate child protection. Yet, digital rights and free speech advocates express concerns over potential safety and privacy risks. Jacobs, a Roblox official, stated their AI technology guesses age based on facial features, with an average deviation of 1.4 years from a child’s real age.

Jacobs insists the technology offers more precision than users selecting their age from a list, marking the end of self-reported ages. The firm allows users to contest incorrect age assessments. Those marked younger can update their age by submitting government IDs, and parents can adjust ages on their children’s accounts.

Roblox employs a continuous age estimation system monitoring account ages against user behavior. Indicators include playing times, game types, and chat language. For example, language used by tweens differs from that of older users. This system prompts age reverification if discrepancies are detected.

No system is flawless, and sometimes errors occur. We aim to remedy inaccuracies but prevent system abuse, Jacobs emphasized.

Krista Carroll, a parent who visited Roblox’s headquarters, highlighted the challenges of parenting in the digital age. She appreciated Roblox’s commitment to privacy and hoped other companies would adopt similar safety models.

Nevertheless, Roblox’s crackdown on harmful content has met resistance from its vast community of over 24,500 game developers. Recent changes require developers to undergo ID verification, use two-factor authentication, and pay a deposit for game publishing. This deposit is either a subscription or a one-time fee of 1,000 Robux per game. These requirements aim to deter rule-violating content but have sparked backlash from small developers unable to afford them.

Jacobs acknowledged the financial requirement as a commitment to quality and community values. Each game for kids and select accounts must pass a review process, where moderators watch actual player gameplay to catch potential issues.

Through their Community Safety Council, Roblox gathers feedback from creators worldwide. Jacobs noted that while some decisions may be controversial, they align with the company’s long-term vision of safety and respect on the platform.
