James Beard Awards Highlight Immigration and Culinary Excellence
The James Beard Awards celebrated culinary excellence on Monday night in Chicago. These annual honors have been a staple in the restaurant industry since 1991, showcasing the best in the field.
This year’s awards ceremony was marked by themes of immigration and resilience. The Philadelphia restaurant Kalaya was honored as the outstanding restaurant, while Michael Tusk from Quince and Cotogna in San Francisco received acclaim as the outstanding chef. Dana Street, representing the Portland, Maine restaurant group including Fore Street and Scales, was recognized as the outstanding restaurateur. Lei, located in Manhattan’s Chinatown, was awarded best new restaurant.
Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois, up for re-election, expressed congratulations on stage. He highlighted Chicago’s restaurant Smyth, recently named the best restaurant in North America by the World’s 50 Best organization. Pritzker acknowledged the importance of immigrant communities, mentioning his own Ukrainian heritage and recipes. His remarks about these communities facing challenges from the administration elicited applause from the audience. Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson, reinforced the city’s stance against authoritarianism.
Adrian Torres, honored as the best emerging chef for his Mexican American dishes at Maximo in Houston, shared his pride in being an immigrant’s son and a DACA recipient. He expressed his gratitude in Spanish.
