In the month of May, Samuel Gonzalez Terrones was confronted with challenging mental health diagnoses. With depression and schizophrenia identified, he took steps towards improvement by engaging with therapy and medication. His mental health challenges became severe enough that reaching out to the police felt necessary during moments of distress.
Family Turmoil Following Immigration Detention
Compounding Samuel’s difficulties, the arrest of his mother, Minerva Terrones Dominguez, by immigration agents posed significant disruptions. Upon her arrest in San Bernardino, the family faced economic strain while seeking legal aid to reunite Minerva with them. Despite her arrest, she had been in the U.S. for 33 years without legal issues prior. Her detention put Samuel in a vulnerable position at home, often on his own due to family efforts at work to support legal expenses.
Minerva played a crucial role in caring for Samuel, often being his pillar during troubling thoughts. The legal solution, cancellation of removal, aimed to demonstrate substantial hardship on Samuel, a U.S. citizen. Sadly, documentation never reached completion.

Impact of Mental Health and Immigration Policies
On August 12th, Samuel passed away. A letter he wrote highlighted his struggle and the impact his mother’s detention had on him. The aggressive approach of past immigration policies has led advocates to see similar severe cases affecting immigrants’ families. Examples extend beyond Samuel’s family, including tragic cases linked with immigration status changes, adding pressure on those involved.
Samuel’s family retains vivid memories of his personality. He was known for laughter, love for snacks, and ambition to pursue graphic design. His mental health issues began affecting him deeply during his freshman year at Cajon High School.
Various family members played supportive roles, strengthening Samuel with different activities. Despite challenges, he aspired towards recovery thoughtfully.
Legal Battle and Family’s Fight for Justice
During Minerva’s detention, the family’s resources diminished. Samuel often withdrew into solitude. Despite the lawyer’s notification of Samuel’s passing to ICE, the response showed unexpected empathy.
Breaking the news to Minerva at detention was complex and controlled. Legal procedures later acknowledged mistakes in Minerva’s detention, citing absence of warranted detention or determination of public risk. Minerva remains in deportation proceedings.
The loss of Samuel removes the key component for her legal case. Exploring other avenues like military enlistment could provide legal grounds for family relief.
Grieving and Seeking Closure
A family fundraiser helped cover funeral costs. The funeral, held at Rialto Park Cemetery, gathered family and friends to honor Samuel’s memory. Minerva witnessed the farewell to her son, her bond disrupted during her detention.
The profound challenges and losses symbolize a broader reflection on the intersection of immigration policies and personal crises faced by families like the Gonzalez family.
