A Florida mother, Jessica Fortner, was taken aback when she found her 3-week-old daughter, Everleigh, lying on a couch. Her initial shock led her to review the security camera footage in her friend’s home, where she and her children were staying.
The Morning of the Incident
On the morning of the incident, Fortner was home alone with her children, Everleigh and her 2-year-old son, Greyson, while her partner was out of town. She mentioned, “My man was out working, and I was solo parenting, which was normal for us.”
The Mystery of the Bassinet
Everleigh was initially asleep in her bassinet, which had a secured zip-up mesh cover. Fortner, needing to use the bathroom, left Greyson occupied and heard some fussing from Everleigh but thought nothing of it because the baby usually remained content.
Returning to the living room, Fortner was surprised to find Everleigh on the couch. The realization soon hit her—Greyson had unzipped the bassinet and carried his sister over to the couch. How he managed to do this without difficulty remained unclear.
Insights from Security Camera Footage
Fortunately, a security camera positioned in the living room captured the whole scene. Reviewing the footage, Fortner witnessed her toddler carrying Everleigh across the room. The footage showed Greyson’s effort to assist his little sister, presenting a mix of emotions for Fortner.
“Watching him, I was holding my breath, scared he would drop her,” Fortner recounted. “When he safely placed her on the couch, I was relieved but also horrified as he wasn’t supporting her head and neck properly.”
Parental Use of Security Technology
More parents use in-home security cameras to monitor their children. A survey of 2,000 U.S. parents by OnePoll for Asurion revealed 59 percent use Wi-Fi-enabled cameras at home. Seventy-six percent employ smart technology like security cameras and video doorbells for child safety.
Perceptions Over Time
Initially, the video left Fortner anxious. Greyson, not very talkative at the time, explained to his mother that he was trying to “help Sissy.” As time passed, Fortner’s perception of the event changed.
She started sharing the footage with friends and family, finding humor in Greyson’s innocent attempt to assist his sister. “It’s a reminder that kids are unpredictable,” Fortner noted. “No matter how attentive you are, unexpected moments happen. Now it’s a cherished family memory.”
This story serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of childhood and parenting, illustrating a unique family experience that Fortner holds dear.
