Michael D. Shear interviewed voters in Ashton-in-Makerfield and Hindley regarding the upcoming special parliamentary election on June 18.
The idea that Ashton-in-Makerfield, once a coal mining town in northern England, might influence the removal of Britain’s prime minister seemed unlikely a few months ago. Yet, when Andy Burnham set up his election campaign headquarters near a local sports club, this prospect was on everyone’s minds.
Voters believe that if Mr. Burnham succeeds in the June 18 special election, he could challenge Mr. Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party and the nation. Due to Mr. Starmer’s unpopularity, many residents think Mr. Burnham might easily succeed in an intraparty contest, potentially leading to a change in control at Downing Street.
“Let’s face it, I think that’s the only reason he’s doing it — so he can challenge Starmer,” said Paul Kirkwood, a retired logistics operations manager and lifelong Labour supporter. “We need a change of direction, and we’re not going to get it with Starmer.”
The election outcome could significantly impact Britain’s government amidst global conflicts and critical domestic issues, such as a struggling economy, high living costs, youth unemployment, and healthcare challenges. Many Labour supporters seem to agree that only a change in party leadership can address these problems.
