Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed emphasized the importance of leaving healthcare decisions to doctors and patients during a rally at Michigan State University. El-Sayed, previously head of the Detroit Health Department, stated that competent doctors are best suited to determine treatment plans for sex changes without government intervention.
Throughout his campaign, El-Sayed has highlighted his background as a physician, asserting this experience will be valuable if he becomes the first doctor elected as a Democratic senator in 50 years. However, controversy surrounds this claim. El-Sayed has never been licensed to practice medicine in Michigan or New York.
“I went to a complete medical school,” El-Sayed stated. “Those I graduated with also completed extensive training and exams to provide full healthcare.”
El-Sayed’s comments came amid broader actions to limit minors’ access to sex change procedures, including hormone therapy and surgeries. The Trump administration has worked to restrict these procedures for children, with agreements from several hospitals to pause such treatments.
El-Sayed promotes a Medicare for All approach to healthcare. While advocating for government-funded healthcare, he insists that treatment decisions should remain between patients and their healthcare providers.
The Right to Try Act, which allows terminally ill patients to experiment with unapproved drug treatments, was cited by El-Sayed. He suggests this act supports the idea that healthcare decisions belong to individuals and their doctors, free from government restriction.
Concerns persist regarding the safety and efficacy of treatments for those with gender dysphoria. The Federal Trade Commission is evaluating claims against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, which allegedly misled the public about the implications and risks of sex change procedures.
Internationally, England’s National Health Service has paused “cross-sex” hormone treatments for some minors, citing insufficient research supporting their safety.
Fox News Digital sought a response from El-Sayed’s office regarding his medical background, but no immediate comment was provided.
