Abdul El-Sayed’s Narrow Victory in Michigan Senate Primary
DETROIT (AP) — Abdul El-Sayed, formerly involved in public health, secured a narrow win over Rep. Haley Stevens in the U.S. Senate primary Democratic race in Michigan. This triumph signals a significant challenge for progressives in a battleground state. The upcoming clash with Republican Mike Rogers, an ex-congressman, in November will play a crucial role in shaping Senate control.
Abdul El-Sayed’s victory catalyzes Democratic unity amid internal friction following the divisive primary.
After conceding defeat, Stevens expressed support for El-Sayed despite being supported by the Democratic establishment, including outgoing Sen. Gary Peters. El-Sayed’s campaign focused on radical reforms geared toward tackling corporate interests and opposing President Donald Trump.
Addressing supporters, El-Sayed quoted Muhammad Ali, proclaiming his win symbolized shaking up the political landscape, despite its narrow margin. The Associated Press confirmed El-Sayed’s victory due to insufficient votes left for Stevens to surpass him.
El-Sayed’s win, leading by 14,893 votes, marked a near 1% edge over Stevens out of over 1.5 million ballots counted. Notably, El-Sayed had previously lost the gubernatorial primary to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which highlighted a shift within the Democratic Party towards progressive agendas. His platform included ‘Medicare for All,’ reducing military assistance to Israel, and campaign finance reform. Key progressive figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supported his bid, presenting it as a grassroots movement against establishment influence.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen characterized El-Sayed’s win as a pivotal moment for the Democratic establishment to reassess their approach. The immediate challenge involves Democrats uniting to counter Mike Rogers, with Republicans already allocating substantial funds for the general election. Curtis Hertel of the Michigan Democratic Party stressed the importance of collaboration to reclaim national leadership.
Stevens, a seasoned congresswoman with a background in manufacturing and economic focus, emphasized her electoral experience as crucial for defeating Rogers, arguing that El-Sayed’s progressive stance might alienate moderates.
El-Sayed’s campaign theme revolved around rejecting corporate influence in favor of a progressive stance, gaining endorsements from figures like Melat Kiros and influencer Hasan Piker at his watch party.
Voters showed distinct preferences, with some advocating for El-Sayed’s active approach while others lauded Stevens for her collaborative work ethic.
Outside spending shaped the primary dynamics, with groups supporting Stevens contributing over $50 million to her campaign.
Stevens received significant backing from AIPAC alongside other national organizations, focusing on pro-Israel candidates. Yet, El-Sayed advocated for ending military aid to Israel, evident in the primary reflecting internal Democratic debate on U.S.-Israel relations.
Another victory in Detroit saw state Rep. Donavan McKinney win the U.S. House primary, signaling a race-driven contest reflecting Detroit’s demographic representation.
