Acting Director of National Intelligence William Pulte Announces Fourth Round of Layoffs

Acting Director of National Intelligence, William Pulte, has announced the completion of a fourth series of layoffs in his office. He posted this update on X, stating that since assuming the role, his team has been strategically reducing the size of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). The focus is now more aligned with national security, legal compliance, and statutory requirements.

In addition, Pulte expressed his gratitude for the ongoing restructuring efforts, emphasizing the approach’s cautious and calculated nature. Earlier, in July, he highlighted the increased efficiency and effectiveness of U.S. National Intelligence following a third round of personnel cuts, aimed at removing redundant or non-essential staff members.

President Donald Trump appointed Pulte, who also leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as the acting DNI. This move followed Tulsi Gabbard’s departure from the position last month, due to her husband’s health issues. Trump had previously criticized ODNI, expressing concerns about its size and the necessity of certain carryover staff from previous administrations.

Trump encouraged Pulte to initiate a downsizing process, with the expectation that his eventual DNI nominee would continue this effort. The President has nominated Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, for the Director of National Intelligence role. Clayton has cleared significant hurdles, enhancing prospects for his confirmation and the continuation of critical anti-terrorism programs.

Pulte expressed gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to serve as the acting DNI. He praised Trump’s leadership and noted the progress achieved in operational and transparency aspects within a short tenure.
