Active Shooter in Midland, Texas Ends in Fatal Standoff
In Midland, Texas, a gunman died following a confrontation with police on Friday. This incident followed an attack that resulted in one death and left at least nine people injured, according to city officials.
Sequence of Events
Midland police reported that the active shooter situation began in one area of the city. It concluded near a veterinary hospital several hours later. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the suspect’s death. Using footage from drones and robots, Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed that the shooter was dead.
Andrea Mendias, who works next to the veterinary clinic, said she heard sounds resembling a small explosion at the closed facility. Heavily armed police officers quickly arrived in the parking lot, and some entered the building. Mendias reported hearing at least 40 gunshots earlier.
Police Response and Hospital Updates
Video footage from Mendias captured officers exiting an armored police vehicle while deploying robots in the vicinity. Midland Memorial Hospital stated that four individuals underwent surgery due to injuries. Three others were treated and released, while two remained in stable condition.
The city, with a population of approximately 140,000, lies in Texas’s central oil region. This area was also near the 2019 deadly shooting rampage. In that event, a gunman dismissed from his oil services job killed seven people and wounded about 24 others. The shooter fired randomly while driving through the Odessa and Midland areas. These cities are located over 300 miles west of Dallas.
