The decline of residential psychiatric treatment options for youth is a pressing issue that states need to address. Without suitable treatment facilities, many at-risk youth may find themselves in juvenile detention, which can lead to further negative outcomes.
Joshua Beasley Jr.’s case serves as a stark reminder of this problem. Joshua entered the Texas juvenile justice system in 2018 at the age of 11, following several misdemeanor offenses. These offenses included incidents such as kicking a school safety officer and spitting on a police officer. Despite starting as a low-level juvenile case, Joshua’s situation worsened. Over time, he faced additional charges and spent five years in secure custody.
During his time in detention, Joshua exhibited severe behavioral issues. He engaged in self-harm and made multiple suicidal gestures and attempts. Ultimately, he was transferred to adult prison, where he tragically passed away by suicide in 2023 at the age of 16.
This case underscores the urgent need for states to reverse the decline of psychiatric treatment facilities for youth. More appropriate care and intervention could potentially prevent similar tragedies in the future. It highlights the critical need for a more compassionate and effective approach to handling young individuals with mental health challenges.
