Air Traffic Controller Prevents Potential Collision at Phoenix Airport

An incident involving two American Airlines aircraft sharing the same flight number and radio frequency was successfully averted by a quick-thinking air traffic controller. The situation unfolded late Thursday night at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The two planes involved were American Airlines Flight 2482 arriving from Chicago and another plane departing for Chicago. Both flights, due to an error, used the same call sign, creating the risk of a dangerous situation.

Recognizing the potential danger, the experienced air traffic controller intervened. The controller issued clear instructions by distinguishing between the two flights as “American 2842 departing” and “American 2482 arriving.” This quick action prevented a possible collision and ensured safety as both planes continued their journeys without incident.

“I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years,” the controller informed the pilots, as recorded by ATC.com. “I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s pretty incredible.” He also mentioned, “It could have been disastrous, but I’m glad it all worked out.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later confirmed that the required separation between the aircraft was maintained throughout the event. The FAA has launched an investigation to understand the circumstances better.

According to American Airlines, the issue arose because the arriving flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport was delayed. This delay led to the use of a different aircraft, which took off from Phoenix while still using the same callsign. American Airlines stated it is reviewing all details related to these flights.

“The diligence and professionalism of air traffic controllers and our pilots ensured required separation was always maintained, and the issue was identified and addressed,” the airline said. “Both flights continued safely and without incident.”
