Airport Chaos as ICE Agents Deployed to Ease TSA Lines Amid Government Shutdown
President Donald Trump has taken steps to address the security delays and worker shortages at U.S. airports caused by a partial government shutdown. ICE agents have been deployed to assist TSA, whose employees have faced unpaid days for over 37 days. The measure aims to reduce passenger wait times during spring break travel.
Administration officials clarified that ICE agents would help with tasks that do not require specialized skills. This initiative aims to ensure security while improving efficiency at key airports across the nation.
Arrest of Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant
A Southwest Airlines flight attendant, Lorenzo Thompson, a Jamaican citizen, was arrested on July 14 for allegedly overstaying his visa. Thompson arrived in the United States on April 17, 2021, with a visa that expired on October 16, 2021. He was taken into custody while at work in Nashville, Tennessee.
The agency stated that Thompson had not departed the U.S., violating immigration laws. ICE confirmed he will remain in custody while awaiting immigration proceedings. They offer illegal immigrants $2,600 plus a free flight if they opt for voluntary deportation.
TWU Local 556, representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants, acknowledged his arrest and pledged support for Thompson and his family during this difficult period. Meanwhile, Thompson had been in pursuit of U.S. citizenship and had filed for asylum.
An online crowdfunding page launched to aid with Thompson’s legal expenses described him as someone who left Jamaica seeking safety from abuse. According to the page, he has been dedicated to building a life in the U.S., maintaining a clean record and contributing positively as a flight attendant.
Fox News Digital has contacted Southwest Airlines for their comments on the matter.
