Republican Senator Dan Sullivan narrowly trails Democrat Mary Peltola in the latest poll for the critical Alaska Senate race. Democrats are striving to reclaim control of both the House and Senate in the November midterms. However, they face challenges in securing a majority in the Senate, needing victories in conservative states like Alaska, which heavily supported Donald Trump.

Mary Peltola’s Campaign

Mary Peltola, who formerly represented Alaska’s at-large congressional district, is seen as a strong contender against Sullivan, who first took office in 2015. Democrats are optimistic about the race, counting on a favorable national mood shaped by Trump’s declining approval ratings.

Alaska employs ranked choice voting. Voters rank candidates by preference. If no candidate secures a majority initially, the lowest-ranked candidate is eliminated, and votes redistributed until a candidate exceeds 50%.

The Alaska Survey Research poll shows Peltola at 50.8% and Sullivan at 49.2%.

This poll of 1,371 likely voters was conducted with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points. In previous polls, Peltola has also shown an edge.

In a statement, Peltola’s spokesperson highlighted strong grassroots support with over 10,000 volunteers, indicating Alaskans’ readiness to support Peltola and shift focus in the Senate.

A separate poll from The New York Times and Siena University gives Sullivan a slight 2-point lead in the first round. This poll included 593 likely voters and had a margin of error of ±5.4 percentage points.

Analysts from Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify this race as a toss-up. Peltola’s narrow loss in the 2024 race, despite Trump’s substantial victory, underscores her potential in more Democrat-friendly scenarios.

Alaska’s Political Landscape

Though historically leaning Republican, Alaska is now considered a target for Democrats, mainly due to Peltola’s candidacy. Cities like Anchorage are becoming more politically mixed, decreasing the GOP’s traditional margins.

Alaska has demonstrated independent voting tendencies, seen in its state Senate’s coalition of Democrats and moderate Republicans. It has elected Democrats statewide before, indicating potential shifts in voter sentiment.

Significance of an Alaska Victory

Winning Alaska would be crucial for Democrats aiming for a Senate majority. With a current Republican majority of 53-47, Democrats need to flip four seats.
