Americans Reflect on Nation’s Greatest Accomplishments
America approaches its 250th anniversary with significant historical milestones. Recent polling by NBC News, supported by More Perfect, highlights these achievements. Respondents identified key accomplishments: the abolition of slavery, expanding civil rights, World War II victory, and landing people on the moon.
The poll was open-ended, allowing varied responses. Approximately two-thirds of participants noted rights expansion, while others cited military, diplomatic, scientific, or economic achievements.
Impact of Abolition and Civil Rights
Slavery’s end after the Civil War and the 13th Amendment stood out. The amendment officially abolished slavery, freeing over 4 million enslaved individuals. A Texas man remarked, “The abolition of slavery was a magnificent achievement for us. I think one of our strengths was we used to make laws to help people.” Others believe the amendment laid the groundwork for equal opportunities in society.
The 19th Amendment expanding voting rights to women in 1920 marked another key achievement in rights expansion. An older California woman noted, “There’s more opportunity to further people’s education than there used to be.” Title IX in 1972 also prohibited gender-based discrimination in federally funded institutions.
Military and Diplomatic Achievements
World War II victory was significant due to the preservation of democratic values. A Washington state man emphasized, “It changed the direction of the world, and it helped preserve our Western values.” Winning reflected on democracy triumphing over fascism.
A Virginia Democrat expressed, “The end of World War II was when the nation was unified.” A Tennessee man viewed it as a declaration of America’s global military presence, quoting former Army Staff Sgt. David Bellavia’s message on U.S. defense capabilities.
Technological Achievements
Respondents also highlighted technological advancements, notably the space program. As NASA pursues the Artemis program, participants recalled the moon landing as a top achievement. An Idaho man noted, “Technology at the time wasn’t exactly very good. It’s really kind of amazing they were able to do that with 1960s technology.” The moon landing symbolizes American ingenuity and technological progress.
