Andrew S. Boutros, appointed as the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois by the Trump administration, oversees a critical criminal investigation involving E. Jean Carroll. Carroll, a former magazine writer, accused Donald J. Trump of sexual assault.
Boutros took on this role in Chicago over a year ago. His resume includes experience as a federal prosecutor handling drug trafficking, white-collar crimes, and money laundering cases. He later transitioned to private practice before his current appointment.
Since becoming the U.S. attorney in Chicago, Boutros, 48, has focused on prosecuting financial fraud, firearm possession, robbery, and violent threats. He has also reallocated resources to tackle politically charged cases aligned with the Trump administration’s agenda. Despite criticism, he remains committed to his direction.
Christopher V. Parente, a former deputy chief in the Chicago office, expressed concern about Boutros’s approach. Parente represented a defendant in a case against anti-immigration protesters prosecuted by Boutros’s office. He believes Boutros prioritizes Trump’s interests over the credibility of the U.S. attorney’s office.
Recently, Judge April M. Perry reprimanded Boutros in her courtroom. She found that prosecutors in his office acted improperly before a grand jury. “Your sole goal is to do justice,” Judge Perry emphasized, highlighting the broken trust that Boutros’s actions have caused.
This situation underscores the internal challenges and controversies within the Chicago office under Boutros’s leadership. His approach has faced pushback from both legal professionals and the judiciary.
