Angel Reese faced an eventful weekend that concluded with an injury and one of her toughest performances of the season. Playing for the Atlanta Dream, Reese left Sunday’s game against her former team, the Chicago Sky, after her leg gave out during a layup attempt in the fourth quarter.
Reese initially got back on her feet after the fall but soon went down again. The Dream declared her out for the rest of the game due to a left leg injury. Before her exit, Reese had a challenging performance, scoring only eight points and grabbing five rebounds in 20 minutes. Her shooting was off, with a 3-of-13 record from the field, missing her only three-point attempt, along with three turnovers. Her performance resulted in a minus-7 rating, the lowest among Dream players, and she committed three fouls.
Reese’s contribution included four offensive rebounds, commonly known as ‘mebounds’ when players recover their missed shots. While she is a top rebounder in women’s basketball, this tactic didn’t seem to boost her overall stats during the game. Entering the match, Reese averaged 15.7 points and a league-high 11.8 rebounds per game. She had recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds against Toronto. However, against the Chicago Sky, who had traded her in the offseason, she missed 10 of her 13 shots.
Her below-par performance wasn’t a result of the injury sustained, as she had played for 20 minutes prior to getting hurt. After the game, Dream head coach Karl Smesko mentioned Reese was in “great spirits” with her teammates. WNBA reporter Wilton Jackson noted that Smesko felt uneasy letting Reese continue due to her apparent pain, despite her eagerness to play.
Fortunately for Reese, her teammates managed to secure a victory. Jordin Canada scored the winning layup in the final moments, leading the Dream to a 93-91 win over the Sky, improving their record to 16-10. Despite the rough outing, Atlanta now stands 2-0 against the Sky since acquiring Reese.
Reese’s performance might not have been the redemption she anticipated against her old team. Missing more shots than she scored or rebounded, she also had three turnovers and fouls before her injury. Looking ahead, Atlanta has a break until July 29, allowing Reese time to recover. However, the WNBA All-Star Game on July 25 looms, and the league would benefit from her participation.
Despite this challenging game, Reese remains a significant draw in the league following Caitlin Clark. The prospect of her playing in the All-Star Game adds interest, and there is hope for her recovery in time.
