The Arctic region holds increasing importance for both the United States and the world. In May, a joint statement by the U.S. and its allies highlighted the critical need for cooperation in Arctic security and economic development. This aligns with growing global attention on the region’s opportunities and challenges.
Despite this focus, a recent decision has stirred concern. Support for the Arctic Report Card, a key annual publication since 2006, has been withdrawn. This report is integral for businesses, towns, and development groups. It provides essential data to guide decisions related to the Arctic.
The announcement of the cancellation came to me, my fellow editors, and personnel from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration earlier this month. This unexpected move puts into question how stakeholders will access crucial information about the region going forward.
