Shooting at Tucson Gay Bar Investigated
Police in Arizona are investigating a shooting at a Tucson gay bar that resulted in three deaths, including the shooter. The incident is being treated as a possible hate crime. Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33, were shot and killed in the parking lot of Venture-N shortly after midnight on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Ousman Ceesay, 44, also died from a gunshot wound at a local hospital. According to the Tucson Police Department, Ceesay was found carrying a note listing several LGBTQIA+-associated businesses, suggesting a targeted motive.
Increased Police Presence
The investigation is ongoing, yet no active threat to the community is currently known. Police have heightened their presence around other gay-friendly businesses to ensure safety. “Bias-based crimes are especially heinous and have no place in our community,” stated Police Chief Monica Prieto.
Investigators are thoroughly examining evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Details about Ceesay’s knowledge of the victims and the nature of his death are still pending.
Community Response
A memorial has been established outside Venture-N, featuring flowers, candles, and photos honoring Siqueiros and Capara. Local groups, including Tucson Queerstory and Southern Arizona Senior Pride, planned a candlelight vigil in response.
PFLAG Phoenix highlighted Venture-N as a historic safe haven for Tucson’s queer community, noting the tragedy as a reminder of the ongoing issue of homophobia. The LGBTQIA+ community in Tucson is grappling with shock and grief, exacerbated by past traumatic events.
Impact on LGBTQ Seniors
Mary O’Donoghue, executive director of Southern Arizona Senior Pride, described the shooting’s impact on older LGBTQ individuals. Many seniors are reliving past experiences of violence and discrimination, such as the Stonewall riots.
The incident resonates with those who have previously experienced similar tragedies, like the 2022 Colorado Springs shooting and the 2016 Orlando Pulse nightclub tragedy.
Tucson Mayor’s Statement
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero condemned the shooting, labeling it a direct attack on the LGBTQ+ community and highlighting the persistent issue of gun violence and homophobia in the country.
