The Atlanta Dream are advancing to the second round of the WNBA playoffs after defeating the Washington Mystics in a first-round sweep. On Wednesday night, they secured a 93-75 victory at CareFirst Arena, bringing an end to their postseason drought since 2018.
Entering Game 2, the Mystics were determined to keep their season alive, maintaining a competitive edge throughout much of the matchup. Despite trailing by seven points at the onset of the fourth quarter, Washington narrowed Atlanta’s lead to three points. However, Jordin Canada stepped up for the Dream, scoring seven consecutive points during a pivotal fourth-quarter stretch, ultimately amassing 17 points in the process. Her performance helped Atlanta transition from a tight contest to a decisive win.
Atlanta’s playoff journey was bolstered by their roster’s depth. Known for their formidable lineup, the Dream had stars like Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, and Angel Reese in leading roles. This season, however, contributions were abundant across their roster, proving vital against a physically challenging series versus Washington.
The Mystics presented challenges during both games, entering the postseason on a high note after winning nine of their last 11 games. Sharing the WNBA’s best record post-All-Star break with Atlanta, Washington proved a formidable opponent. Yet, Atlanta consistently found an additional gear when crucial moments arose.
In Game 1, the Dream overcame an 11-point deficit to clinch a win against Washington with a score of 92-77. Atlanta’s defense forced 22 turnovers and broke a franchise playoff record with 16 steals. Howard led the team with 26 points and five steals, supported by Gray’s 22 points and Reese’s 13 points with 12 rebounds in her playoff debut.
Washington had moments of promise as well. Rookie Sonia Citron delivered strong performances, scoring 25 points in both games, while teammates Kiki Iriafen and Cassandre Prosper provided energy as they vied to extend their season. Despite their efforts, Atlanta consistently had responses ready.
As the Dream advance deeper into the playoffs, they must manage expectations and caution against previous pitfalls. Last year, the team experienced a painful first-round elimination despite robust regular season performance. Acknowledging this, Gray expressed her determination to avoid past disappointments during training camp.
The Dream approached the current season with renewed vigor, achieving 30 regular-season victories and wrapping up with five consecutive wins. They seized their playoff opportunities, defeating Washington decisively both times, despite regular-season challenges from the Mystics.
Atlanta now prepares for the semifinals against the New York Liberty, who surprisingly upset top-seeded Minnesota Lynx. Although New York entered the playoffs as the eighth seed, they have demonstrated that regular-season records carry little significance in the postseason.
With ample momentum, Atlanta moves forward, having answered doubts regarding their ability to succeed where previous iterations fell short. The team’s resolve and tactics will now be tested as they seek a triumphant postseason.
For the first time in eight years, the Dream are celebrating their advancement to the WNBA semifinals, continuing their quest for victory.
