Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens criticized the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) leadership after the city was excluded from the shortlist to host the 2028 presidential convention. In a letter, Dickens accused party leaders, particularly DNC Chairman Ken Martin, of neglecting Black voters and southern states.
Dickens’ stance reflects ongoing concerns among southern Democrats about the party’s approach to the region. South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain emphasized the importance of the South, while other chairs have warned against taking Black voter support for granted.
“They are hesitant to leave their comfort zone, neglecting the South as a crucial component,” wrote Dickens. He argued that Atlanta, a potential stronghold, deserves recognition in the convention hosting process.

The DNC did not comment specifically on Dickens’ letter but highlighted their broader efforts in the South. DNC Chairman Martin noted that Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia were chosen as finalists due to their strong bids. The DNC aims to work with them as the selection process continues.
Recently, the DNC decided to start its 2028 presidential nominating calendar in South Carolina, emphasizing its commitment to racial diversity. The announcement underscored the presence of 4.6 million Black people across the initial six states.
Factors considered in selecting the host city included community partnerships, logistical capacity, fundraising ability, and alignment with Democratic values. DNC officials visited all five cities, including Atlanta, which has not hosted the convention since 1988.
“The decision reflects a moment where leadership must engage actively,” Dickens continued. “An opportunity for the DNC leadership to show strategic foresight was missed.”
