On October 20, Australia witnessed a shocking incident involving lawmaker Helen Haines. Following a car ramming attack, Haines, an independent parliament member, suffered critical injuries.
The 65-year-old lawmaker was hit by a vehicle while standing near her car outside her office. Witnesses reported that the offender drove into Haines and then reversed, hitting her again. Haines is now in hospital, stable but critically injured, as confirmed by Victoria police.
Authorities have apprehended a 43-year-old male suspect, initially restrained by a bystander. Charges against him include dangerous driving and causing serious injury. The incident is believed to be a targeted attack against a public official. This has raised alarm given the increasing threats against parliamentary figures, with 1,067 reports made in 2025-26, according to national police.
In a public statement, the suspect’s father and stepmother expressed their devastation, noting their long-standing friendship with Haines.
