Bear Encounters Rising in Lake Tahoe: Residents Face Costly Deterrents

Lake Tahoe residents face a growing challenge as black bears increase their home invasions. Homeowners now spend significant amounts to protect their properties from wildlife.

This year, South Lake Tahoe police have received 174 calls related to bears. This figure has risen from 97 during the same timeframe last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Cases include bears entering homes, prompting costly countermeasures.

One couple experienced a bear wandering into their living room while they washed dishes. It explored their home, examined a tube of toothpaste, and urinated before leaving. It marked the couple’s second bear intrusion within a month.

As reported by WSJ, residents like Margaret Deanesly Ziegler have invested around $7,500 in deterrents, including electric mats and steel doors. She expressed frustration, stating, “The bears are winning. I’m the one that’s spending the money.”

Similar events have occurred throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. A recent incident involved a California man using bear spray when a black bear charged him during the Fourth of July. The bear had rummaged through trash in his garage.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife advises the removal of food attractants to prevent bear encounters. They recommend using bear-proof containers, electric fencing, or mats. Bears seeking human food become bolder, with cubs learning such behaviors from their mothers.

The debate among residents continues over whether people or bears are responsible for the increase in incidents. Some residents argue that it is a human problem, seeing bears more as a result of human activity.
