Bill Maher Critiques Fauci Over COVID-19 Origins and Senate Hearing Conduct

Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher expressed strong criticism towards Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, following Fauci’s controversial appearance before a Senate committee. Fauci reportedly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 times during the hearing, concerning his management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maher, during his HBO show ‘Real Time,’ accused Fauci of spreading falsehoods regarding the origins of the COVID-19 virus, which has resulted in over seven million deaths globally. Maher emphasized the importance of understanding how the virus emerged, stating, “The big issue to me is the origin of this, which is very important. How did it start?”

“He was caught in actual lies,” Maher said. “The big issue is the origin, which is very important. How did it start?”

The comedian highlighted Fauci’s initial claim that the virus originated from animal-to-human transmission at a wet market in Wuhan, China. Maher criticized Fauci for dismissing the lab leak theory, which posited that the virus might have escaped from a laboratory.

Maher argued that Fauci knew better, referencing Fauci’s writings, which supposedly indicated he was aware of alternative scientific opinions suggesting a possible lab origin. Maher’s comments follow Fauci’s refusal to answer questions on the funding of “gain-of-function” research in China, a method that involves modifying the genetics of a virus to study it better.

Maher debated the ethics of such research, expressing a conditional agreement with it but warned of its potential dangers. “I would always have said, don’t do it, but it’s a viable debate,” Maher said.

In June 2025, the World Health Organization released a study suggesting a zoonotic spillover from bats or through an intermediate host. Maher critiqued the resistance to exploring the lab leak theory, attributing it to socio-political rather than scientific factors.

He argued that discussions about the theory were stifled due to fears of racial stigmatization. “You couldn’t say it escaped from the lab, because that was the racist point of view somehow,” Maher noted, emphasizing an unnecessary racial implication attached to the theory.

Maher accused the media of protecting Fauci, asserting that they fail to critically evaluate Fauci’s actions due to a perceived loyalty to him. “Once again, Bill Maher is willing to level with the country in a way the liberal, elitist media never would,” Curtis Houck of the Media Research Center told Fox News Digital.
