Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed concerns about Europe’s ability to prevail in a conflict with Russia without U.S. support. Blair emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the United States, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
Blair addressed these concerns during a conversation with Kayleigh McEnany, host of “Saturday in America.” He stated, “If we get drawn into a conflict without the support of America, we don’t win.” He referred to this relationship as essential and underscored the need to support allies who play a significant role in global security.
“This is an essential relationship,” Blair emphasized, “And the reason why I thought we should have supported President Trump when he asked for the use of our bases is in circumstances where your ally is an indispensable part of your security, and they come asking for help, it’s wise to give it to them.”
Blair, who served as the U.K. Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007, spoke at a Board of Peace High Level Briefing in New York City. During his tenure, Blair was a key proponent of the U.S.-U.K. alliance, which he described as crucial for Western security as tensions rise concerning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential threat to NATO countries.
While Blair personally views Putin as not posing a tangible threat to countries beyond Ukraine, he noted that many Europeans differ. Recent reports from U.S. intelligence caution that Russia might attempt a limited attack on a NATO ally to test the alliance’s unity.
Blair highlighted Britain’s reliance on the U.S. should global conflicts escalate, especially when some European leaders voice apprehensions regarding Russia. Instances such as the discovery of an explosives-laden drone near a Ukrainian cargo plane in Germany add to these concerns. Other related incidents, like airspace violations, exacerbate worries.
The U.S. and European nations are exploring strategies to bolster Ukraine’s defenses and deter Russian aggression, all while avoiding full involvement in the ongoing conflict.
