Boris Nadezhdin’s Brief Detention Highlights Panic in Russian Leadership

Boris B. Nadezhdin, an outspoken critic of the Ukraine war, has experienced a notable incident recently. Nadezhdin was briefly detained after being marked as a ‘foreign agent’ amid his intention to contest in Russia’s upcoming parliamentary elections. This designation ended his lengthy political career where surviving dissent against the Russian political regime is rare.

He was charged with a minor offense, adding to the challenges he faces as he prepares for elections following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In a video interview conducted from his residence, Nadezhdin plainly identified the reason for his detention, asserting, “This shows that among our leadership, there is panic and chaos.”

The Kremlin, through its spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov, distanced itself from Nadezhdin’s situation, stating it held no connection to the Kremlin. However, Nadezhdin’s detention is perceived as indicative of governmental pressures. These pressures stem from the ongoing conflict, as the country grapples with drone strikes, a fuel crisis, and economic strains due to war expenditures. Furthermore, the public’s growing frustration over internet restrictions adds to the turbulence faced by the government.
