Caitlin Clark’s Anticipated Debut
Fans eager to see Caitlin Clark in action with Team USA at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup had to exercise patience. Despite the excitement surrounding her senior international debut, Clark was not part of Kara Lawson’s starting lineup against China. The starting guards included Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young, alongside Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper, and Napheesa Collier.
Gray played a crucial role in the 2022 World Cup victory, while Young, recognized as one of the top guards in the WNBA, joined the roster for this tournament. Clark made her entrance halfway through the first quarter as the team established a strong lead against China, with Young contributing seven of the initial 20 points.
Clark’s Performance and Praise
Clark concluded the first quarter contributing a layup, four assists, and a rebound. Throughout the tournament preparations, Lawson praised Clark’s competitive nature and high-level game understanding.
“She is just so competitive, skilled, sees the game at this high level in terms of her ability to be anticipatory, with her passes and with her shots, and her belief and confidence in what she can do is terrific,” Lawson remarked to Sports Illustrated.
Clark arrived at the tournament following an impressive WNBA season, marked by her record-setting August. She averaged or assisted on 44.7 points per game, setting a new WNBA monthly record. Clark’s ability to score and assist consistently was evidenced by her performance in the late August games against the Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky.
Record-Breaking Achievements
Clark broke new ground by becoming the first WNBA player with consecutive games scoring over 30 points and delivering more than 10 assists. In these games, Clark scored 34 points with 12 assists against the Connecticut Sun, followed by 37 points and 10 assists against the Chicago Sky.
Her August performance included five games with at least 20 points and 10 assists, a feat unmatched by any other player in the last five seasons combined.
Looking Ahead
Despite the strategic decision to begin the tournament with more senior players, Clark’s exceptional talent might soon earn her a spot in the starting lineup. Other notable players joining from the bench included Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
