California Traffic Stop Leads to $800,000 Cocaine Seizure

California authorities recently confiscated cocaine valued over $800,000 during a traffic stop, according to officials. The incident occurred when a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer pulled over a 2025 Honda CR-V in Merced County on August 12 due to a suspected traffic violation.

The officer noticed “several indicators of possible criminal activity,” prompting a search of the vehicle. This search revealed a bag containing around 30 pounds of what is believed to be cocaine, with a street value estimated at $817,200.

The driver was taken into custody and lodged at the Merced County Main Jail. The charges include possession of cocaine for sale and its transportation across non-contiguous counties. The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) is managing the investigation.

This seizure follows another significant event last month, where federal authorities found more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine hidden under the floorboards of a commercial truck entering the U.S. from Mexico. This event marked one of the largest drug busts in Southern California for the year, with the cocaine’s street value exceeding $20 million.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also revealed that officers intercepted more than $3.7 million worth of cocaine disguised within a cucumber shipment. At the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, a canine inspection and imaging scan of a tractor-trailer unveiled 112 packages containing 278.88 pounds of cocaine.
