After a thrilling 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32, Canada has advanced to the next stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Stephen Eustaquio became the hero by scoring the decisive goal late in stoppage time.
Eustaquio expressed strong emotions after the win, dedicating his performance to his family, friends, and all Canadians. ‘Everything I do is for my family, my parents, my girlfriend, my daughter, my brother, my friends back home. For all of them,’ he said in a heartwarming statement immediately after the match.
He emphasized the team’s perseverance and belief throughout the game. ‘We worked a lot to get this victory. We wanted to give this win to all Canadians and we just kept believing. We kept pushing,’ Eustaquio stated.
Describing his goal, Eustaquio remarked that he ‘put a little bit of power on it,’ expressing satisfaction at seeing the ball reach the net.
Despite his initial exhilaration, Eustaquio noted the team’s composure after the match. He shared insights on their performance, acknowledging the challenges posed by South Africa but confident in their approach during set pieces and transitions. ‘We performed well. There were moments South Africa had the ball and created problems, but on set pieces and transitions, we never stopped believing,’ he told Fox Sports.
Eustaquio reflected on the team’s determination, sharing his motivational approach. ‘I tell these guys, “When we shoot, we have to give everything we have, like our life depends on it,” and that’s what I did,’ he said about his game-winning goal.
Although Canada made history, Eustaquio stressed the team’s calm demeanor in anticipation of the Round of 16. They are prepared to face a strong adversary, either Morocco or the Netherlands, emphasizing they want their opponent to feel they are facing ‘the hardest team.’ Morocco and the Netherlands compete for the Round of 16 spot, with Morocco favored to advance.
