Recently, Canadian soccer fans booed the U.S. national anthem at two Major League Soccer (MLS) games. This public display reflects increasing frustration between Canada and the United States as trade talks between the two countries have stalled, heightening tensions. The incidents occurred during matches between the Vancouver Whitecaps vs. FC Dallas and CF Montréal vs. Los Angeles Galaxy.
Footage from the games showed fans booing during the renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Social media users reacted, with one posting a video of the Montreal incident stating, “OH GREAT the crowd in Montreal Canada booing the American National Anthem at the Montreal vs. Los Angeles Galaxy soccer match. That should be an additional tariff on Canada.” Efforts to receive comments from the teams involved were made by Newsweek.
Trade Negotiations Breakdown
The situation follows a breakdown in trade discussions between Canadian and U.S. officials. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the U.S. for altering deal terms last minute, describing them as “unfair” and “uneconomic.” Meanwhile, U.S. representatives suggested that Ottawa missed an opportunity.
In retaliation, the U.S. has imposed a 50% tariff on many Canadian goods, including cars, beverages, and dairy, amounting to roughly $20 billion. Carney stated that Canada would reciprocate with equivalent tariffs. These measures will target various U.S. sectors, including steel, agricultural equipment, and electronics, starting September 8.
Carney affirmed Canada’s dedication to negotiating a beneficial trade agreement, but also acknowledged the changing dynamics with the U.S., declaring the need to protect Canadian interests.
Widening Cultural Divide
U.S.-Canada relations have strained further since President Trump returned to power in January 2025. Tariff disputes and Trump’s controversial remarks have fuelled growing Canadian resentment.
Responses to the trade conflict include Canadian provinces banning U.S. alcohol sales and consumer boycotts of American products. Similar tensions during Trump’s earlier administration also saw sports fans in Canada express disapproval through similar actions.
A recent Angus Reid Institute poll highlights this sentiment, showing 48% of Canadians hold an unfavorable view of the U.S., contrasting with 79% of Americans who view Canadians positively.
