Cancer Survivor’s River Journey with His Dog: A Triumph of Spirit and Innovation

An inspiring tale comes from Florida where Frank Carter, a 67-year-old cancer survivor, completed an arduous journey of over 2,000 miles down the Missouri River. Accompanied by his loyal dog, Amos, Carter made the trip after undergoing pioneering immunotherapy treatment. The voyage lasted 64 days, seeing them navigate America’s longest river in a canoe Carter built by hand.

The journey started in Montana and finished near St. Louis, Missouri. Throughout, Carter and Amos relied on camping by the river’s banks, often facing severe weather, including storms and hail.

Before his cancer diagnosis, Carter was already a seasoned adventurer. In 2019, he trekked the Appalachian Trail over five months, and in 2020, he completed an eight-week cycling journey from San Diego to New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

However, in 2021, his physical capability faced a new challenge following a routine 5K race. Post-race fatigue led to medical tests and a diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer. He underwent 15 rounds of chemotherapy in Orlando.

Despite treatment reducing the cancer, traces remained, prompting Carter to pursue CAR T-cell therapy at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. This therapy involved re-engineering his immune cells to target cancer cells, leaving him cancer-free for four years.

Carter built his cedar-strip canoe for this journey and actively shares his story to motivate others facing similar health battles to remain hopeful and engaged in life.

Throughout his cancer battle, his golden retriever, Amos, provided emotional support. Carter adopted Amos right before starting chemotherapy.
