Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire following a trilateral meeting initiated by the U.S. State Department on Tuesday and Wednesday. This development comes as U.S. President Donald Trump announced discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hezbollah representatives, leading to a mutual agreement to halt hostilities.
Despite this, clashes continued on Monday evening. The Israeli military reported intercepting two projectiles that crossed into northern Israel from Lebanon, according to Reuters. Additionally, the Associated Press noted that Israel had carried out strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs before President Trump’s announcement.
Ceasefire Conditions
The State Department release on Wednesday emphasized that the ceasefire is based on “a complete cessation of Hizbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hizbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector.” The joint statement from the three governments focused on commitments to restore stability and strengthen security in Lebanon, stressing that future relations should be governed by the sovereign governments of Israel and Lebanon.
This ceasefire could highlight a diplomatic achievement for the Trump administration, which has been attempting to balance military actions and negotiated agreements to prevent broader conflicts in the region. In a post to Truth Social, President Trump mentioned his discussions with Netanyahu, urging him to avoid a major raid on Beirut, and thanked him for redirecting troops. He expressed optimism, hoping for the ceasefire to last “for ETERNITY.”
The State Department’s release included condemnation of Iran’s actions in the region, stating Iran’s support for proxies and aggressive activities continue to undermine stability in the Middle East.
The two factions had previously observed a ceasefire since mid-April, according to the AP.
This situation remains dynamic and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
