Celebrating the Centennial of Electric Trains at Pullman National Historical Park

On July 26, 2026, visitors experienced a unique tour at Pullman National Historical Park on Chicago’s Far South Side. Zachary Ehlers, the president of the Illinois Railway Museum, led a tour of an electrified rail car from 1926. This event was part of Railroad Days and marked the 100th anniversary of electric trains replacing steam locomotives for commuter services along the south lakefront.

During the weekend celebration, attendees explored historical rail cars and enjoyed rides on a miniature train. This opportunity allowed visitors to touch history and see the evolution of rail transport firsthand.

The event highlighted the significance of electric trains, which began their service near the lakefront a century ago. These trains represented a technological transformation, moving from steam to electric power, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of commuter services.
