Eva Marie Saint, renowned for her role in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, and Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, passed away at the age of 102. Saint began her journey in the arts in Albany and Delmar, New York. Known for her delicate and porcelain-like beauty, she attended the Actors Studio in New York. Her early career included performances on Broadway and live television in the late 1940s.
Saint’s film debut came when she was nearly 30, after director Elia Kazan encouraged her to audition for a role alongside Marlon Brando. During a screen test for On the Waterfront, they performed a scene where her character was to bar Brando’s character from entering her home. This audition would secure her role as Edie, a Catholic schoolgirl embroiled in the complex world of union corruption in Hoboken, N.J., and seeking justice for her brother’s murder. Her performance earned her an Oscar.
In 1959, Saint took on the role of Eve Kendall in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, playing a femme fatale opposite Cary Grant. Despite her on-screen persona, Saint’s off-screen life contrasted starkly. After her marriage to director Jeffrey Hayden in 1951, she chose to limit her roles, emphasizing time with her children. She returned to television in the 1970s, achieving success and winning an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries People Like Us.
