Challenges of Water Scarcity for Ranchers in the U.S. Rockies
In Montrose, Colorado, rancher Scott Snyder struggles with the demanding task of ensuring adequate water for his livestock. Water spills from an open tank, prompting Snyder to quickly stop the leak. His ranch, Mex and Sons, requires eight trips over nine hours in hot conditions to water his 800 cow-calf pairs.
Snowmelt, traditionally relied upon for stock ponds and springs, was scarce this year. The Upper Colorado River Basin had its lowest snowpack on record. This was exacerbated by climate change, which increased snow drought likelihood by 14 times. Ranchers face significant stress as they manage dwindling water resources.
“If Mother Nature doesn’t want to help out here, we’re probably in a lot of trouble,” Snyder stated.
Snyder and his brother Monte have adapted by reducing their herd, buying supplementary hay, and transporting cattle to find more grazing land. They constantly monitor wildfire risks and also haul drinking water. They are fortunate to refill their tanker, paying a nearby landowner for water access.
Mark Ragsdale, the state’s water commissioner for Norwood, faces similar challenges. His solar-powered well still operates, and his herd remains nearby. He uses a Dodge Ram to transport water, noting the welcome sight of mud after recent monsoonal rains.
Drought Conditions
Lance and Zandon Bray expanded their water truck fleet due to the recent severe snow drought. They maintain cattle with three flatbeds dedicated to hauling water. Although the USDA offers compensation for additional transport costs, time lost remains unrecoverable.
“I’m gonna fight like hell this year so I can turn around and fight like hell next year,” Zandon Bray stated.
The Brays attempt sustainable ranching, running fewer cattle than previous generations. Emotional strain from continuous droughts intensifies as water remains scarce.
Stanford Salazar experiences similar pressures. Trailer tire blowouts disrupt his water hauling routine. New Mexico’s snow levels have drastically decreased, hindering water availability.
Jeff Christensen, in central Utah, drills deep wells to find water. Results remain uncertain amidst lowered water tables. He secures funding assistance from Utah’s Grazing Improvement Program for half the costs.
“I spend the majority of my time on water,” Christensen explained.
