Pennsylvania authorities have charged 14 individuals, mostly Penn State University students, in connection with a suspected cocaine distribution ring. Attorney General Dave Sunday announced that the investigation involved students and two off-campus fraternities.
Details of the Allegations
The Attorney General’s office stated that the group consisted of 13 current or former Penn State students and the father of one student, who faces charges of evidence tampering and obstructing the investigation. The key figures, Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, are accused of being the main cocaine suppliers. These suspects allegedly traveled to Philadelphia and New York regularly to procure substantial quantities of the drug.
Specifically, members of the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities allegedly participated in processing and distributing the cocaine from their fraternity houses. The activities reportedly involved pledges who assisted in cutting and packaging the cocaine.
Additional Charges and Statements
Furthermore, Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat are charged with engaging in corrupt practices, conspiracy, and handling the proceeds of illegal activities. Robert Zanolla faces charges related to conspiracy and the use of communication facilities for criminal activities.
The Attorney General’s office noted that eight individuals, described as “student-aged defendants,” face misdemeanor charges for drug possession and paraphernalia. Among them are Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Kaden Howe, Connor Hurleigh, Seth Beardsley, Kyle Ridpath, Daniel Price, and Charles Wiseman.
Penn State University’s Response
Penn State University has responded to the allegations by suspending the Delta Upsilon fraternity while it conducts an investigation. The university also emphasized that Sigma Chi operates without the institution’s recognition or oversight.
Andrea Dowhower, Vice President for Student Affairs, expressed dismay at the allegations and pledged cooperation with law enforcement. She highlighted Penn State’s commitment to improving health, safety, and hazing education efforts within its organizations.
Reactions from Fraternity Representatives
Delta Upsilon Executive Director Justin Kirk confirmed that the fraternity was previously made aware of the allegations. He stated that involved members have been expelled, suspended, or have resigned. The fraternity aims to collaborate with the university in ongoing investigations.
