Chicago Bears Focus on Left Tackle Position in Preseason Battle
The Chicago Bears prioritized the left tackle position in their preseason game at Soldier Field. Kiran Amegadjie shared playing time with Jedrick Wills Jr., with Braxton Jones likely to start if healthy. Coach Ben Johnson anticipates Jones’ return next week despite his absence on Saturday.
Amegadjie, a Hinsdale Central graduate, was drafted from Yale, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 326 pounds. He was selected in the 2024 NFL draft’s third round. Though he participated in two significant games during his rookie year, an elbow injury last season sidelined him. Amegadjie expressed eagerness to play again, saying, “It was good to get my feet back under me.” He aims to clean up certain aspects of his play.
During the Bears’ 34-10 victory, the Browns starters played briefly. Amegadjie faced Jared Verse, acquired by the Browns in a trade with the Rams, for three plays. Wills took over and surrendered a sack to edge Julian Okwara. Amegadjie also allowed Okwara to slip past, though quarterback Tyson Bagent avoided the sack.
Bears coach Ben Johnson remarked on the quarterbackâs hits: “Left tackle is hard for me to assess right now.” Amegadjie successfully executed a two-minute drill before halftime and was active in the second half. His pro career shows room for growth.
Amegadjie acknowledged areas needing improvement: “In the pass game, I need to improve my set and be consistent.” He aims to refine his technique to play consistently. Despite challenges, he remains hopeful about his progress.
Amegadjie’s journey from the Ivy League to the NFL is notable. Before his draft, his father connected him with former Bears coach Matt Eberflus, sparking interest. He doesn’t believe his school influences his NFL path; it’s more about personal conviction. Despite difficulties, he stays motivated to improve daily.
