The Chicago White Sox face the Houston Astros in an American League wild-card series starting Tuesday at Daikin Park in Houston. The White Sox aim to improve on their regular-season performance against the Astros, a team with formidable talent like Yordan Alvarez and strong pitching. The three-game series presents a new challenge.
The Astros secured the AL West title after defeating the Athletics 9-0 to end the regular season. They overtook the Texas Rangers, clinching the division officially. Meanwhile, the White Sox ended their regular season with a 4-2 victory against the Colorado Rockies, achieving an 84-78 record.
White Sox pitcher Anthony Kay impressed with effective pitching, using his changeup successfully. Manager Will Venable praised Kay’s performance, noting the significant impact of his off-speed pitches. Offensive contributions also came from Randal Grichuk and Brenton Doyle, who each hit two-run home runs.
Randal Grichuk emphasized the importance of the playoffs, stating, “The ultimate goal of playing this game is to get in the playoffs.” He added that past performances don’t matter as everything restarts in the postseason.
As the No. 6 seed, the White Sox missed the AL Central title but secured their playoff spot. They are set to play the entire series in Houston. Despite a 2-5 record against the Astros in the regular season, Grichuk expressed confidence in matching up well with the playoff opponent.
Munetaka Murakami had a standout performance against the Astros earlier in the season, contributing two home runs and six RBIs in a single game. The Sox managed to contain Alvarez, limiting him to a .200 average with no home runs during their matchups.
Venable plans to finalize the pitching strategy in Houston, adapting to information about the Astros’ lineup. The White Sox marked a significant improvement from last season, increasing their win total by 24 games.
Anthony Kay expressed surprise at the successful season, highlighting the team’s execution of their vision. As they head into the series, Grichuk insists that previous records don’t matter, as the focus is now on starting the series afresh.
“We don’t look at it as season series record and how we played against them in the past,” Grichuk shared.
Attendance figures show the White Sox attracted 1,986,419 fans during the home season, the largest since 2022, reflecting increased engagement with the team’s improved performance.
