In a game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Chase Meidroth delivered a standout performance. Initially, he sent a long fly down the left-field line in the third inning that curved foul. On the next pitch, Meidroth rectified the trajectory, hitting a three-run home run to left-center field. This contribution was part of a career-high five RBIs for Meidroth, central to the Chicago White Sox’s 14-11 triumph in front of 15,785 attendees.
Expressing his delight, Meidroth remarked, “When you come through for your team, there’s not a better feeling. Getting guys crossing the plate isn’t easy to do every day. It’s an amazing feeling.” His homer marked the second consecutive game where he achieved this feat, aiding the Sox in maintaining their position just one game behind the leading Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. On the same day, the Guardians narrowly won 3-2 against the Boston Red Sox. Both teams have five remaining games in the regular season. The Sox also maintained their third-place position in the American League wild-card standings.
Chicago made an assertive start, scoring in each of the first four innings. They further bolstered their lead with a five-run surge in the seventh inning, securing victory in the initial game of the three-game series. Randal Grichuk, a key contributor, emphasized, “Any time you put up a good amount of runs, much less 14, that’s a great day. We were all swinging and contributing from everyone, 1-through-9. So that’s always encouraging to see.”
“He’s finding different clubs in the bag,” said manager Will Venable. “We know Chase has good plate discipline. He’s willing to pull out the smaller club and use the whole field. He’s tapping into some slug as well. So really cool to see him grow as a player here.”
In the early stages, Meidroth initiated the scoring with a two-run single in the first inning. Brenton Doyle’s home run at the outset of the second inning was a milestone, marking the team’s 200th of the season and extending their lead to 3-0. This was just the beginning, as it was the first of four home runs for the Sox that day. Meidroth’s pivotal three-run homer in the third extended the lead to 6-0.
Grichuk extended the advantage with a powerful three-run home run in the fourth, bringing the score to 9-1. He completed the game just a triple away from completing the cycle, boasting a performance of 4-for-5, including two doubles.
On the mound, Daniel Lynch IV of the Royals struggled, conceding nine runs on seven hits in four innings. “Up and down the lineup, saw some really big performances from some guys,” stated Venable. “Came out with a game plan against Lynch and executed it.”
Anthony Kay started for the Sox, pitching into the fifth inning. Despite allowing four runs on seven hits, he achieved four strikeouts with one walk before leaving in the fifth with two Royals on base and no outs, as the Sox led 9-3. Kay appreciated his team’s defensive efforts, noting a crucial out at third base by Braden Montgomery, and an impressive catch by Grichuk.
Noah Schultz relieved Kay and performed commendably, retiring the next three batters without issue. Schultz pitched two innings, retiring all six batters faced, including one strikeout, earning the win for his efforts. Offensively, the Sox continued to dominate, with Munetaka Murakami adding a two-run home run during a decisive five-run seventh inning.
This display marked the ninth occasion this season where the Sox hit four or more home runs in a single game. Despite a late challenge from the Royals, including a grand slam by Vinnie Pasquantino in the ninth, the White Sox emerged victorious in their final road series of the regular season. We are in the spot that we want to be,” Venable emphasized. “We understand that we are taking this a game at a time and understand what we have in front of us to accomplish. It starts with playing a good game [Wednesday] and that’s what the focus is.”
