The Chicago White Sox faced a tough defeat against the Minnesota Twins, losing 5-1 at Target Field. The game saw 26,225 spectators witness a challenging outing for the Sox.
Drew Romo took center stage as he became the first base runner for the White Sox during the sixth inning. His two-out single to right field brought a spark amidst a potential perfect game bid by the Twins’ starter, Zebby Matthews. It was in the ninth inning when Braden Montgomery’s single knocked in the lone run for the Sox, avoiding a shutout. Sam Antonacci also contributed with two hits, scoring the team’s only run. Despite the loss, the White Sox managed to secure two of the three games in the series, bringing a four-game winning streak to a close.
Key Moments
Drew Romo Ends Perfect Game Bid
Drew Romo celebrated his crucial base hit that broke up Zebby Matthews’ attempt at a perfect game.
Zebby Matthews retired the first 17 batters, maintaining impeccable control. Romo faced a full count with two outs in the sixth and hit a fastball into right field for a single. “His throwing a perfect game didn’t change anything,” Romo mentioned. “I stuck to my plan and approach and worked a good at-bat and got a good pitch to hit.” Matthews’ performance saw him allow one run on five hits, while striking out five without issuing any walks during 8 1/3 innings.
White Sox manager Will Venable shared his thoughts. “He pitched really well, obviously attacked the zone really well, no walks. Offensively, our group swung the bats better than the box score showed. We faced some hard contact early, right at guys, and they made good defensive plays.” Venable acknowledged Matthews’ skillful effort in securing victory, adding, “he did a great job, gave them the chance to win, and we just couldn’t solve what he was throwing at us.”
Defensive plays were notable. Luke Keaschall’s diving catch in the second inning and Walker Jenkins’ running catch in the fifth helped maintain the Twins’ lead.
Sox Hurt by Two-Out Damage
The Twins built their lead predominantly through scoring with two outs. Jordan Hicks opened for the Sox, nearly keeping the inning scoreless. Nonetheless, the Twins capitalized, scoring three runs. Efforts by Hicks and Tyler Gilbert couldn’t prevent the damage as Josh Bell and Trevor Larnach secured runs.
All five Twins’ runs came with two outs. Ryan Jeffers doubled in the third, scoring via Bell’s single and extending the Twins’ lead to 4-0. Keaschall homered in the seventh for the final tally, with bulk pitcher José Urquidy serving five innings with three hits, striking out three, and avoiding walks.
Progress in Division Race
Despite Sunday’s setback, the White Sox made progress in the division race over the weekend. They began the series with a 2 1/2 game lead in the AL Central, exiting with a 3 1/2 game lead over Cleveland Guardians, whose win against Kansas City furthered the standings. The Twins positioned third, trailing 7 1/2 games behind.
“You come here to win a series, and we won the series,” Venable said. “Today was disappointing; we couldn’t get the offense going. A tough first inning on the mound and on defense. We won the series, so we’ll move on.” The Sox set their sights on an upcoming clash with Houston, the AL West leaders.
