Chrissy Metz, widely recognized for her role in ‘This Is Us,’ has candidly shared her decision to start using a GLP-1 weight-loss medication after years of reluctance. On a recent appearance on the ‘Today’ show, the 45-year-old actress revealed her shift in perspective as she approached perimenopause, considering her health and her family’s history of obesity more seriously.
Metz admitted, ‘I was very skeptical about GLP-1s for years.’ However, encouraged by a friend’s detailed insights, she started to see the potential benefits. Her father’s health complications were a pivotal factor, prompting Metz to think, ‘Maybe I should try and get ahead of it.’
Since beginning the treatment, Metz has observed positive changes, noting increased energy levels and improvements in her overall health. Despite initial doubts, Metz emphasized that ‘longevity’ remains a priority. She explained, ‘Learning what it really was and how it affects everybody differently,’ highlighted the personal nature of this decision.
“It’s a whole lifestyle change,” she shared. “It’s not just about taking medication. You can’t think of it as a simple solution. Discipline is key.”
Along with the medication, Metz has incorporated strength training and exercise into her routine. She stressed the importance of commitment, stating, ‘It’s good for me because I’m really putting myself first—a practice I’ve long aspired to embrace.’
Metz’s health journey has been a significant narrative, both personally and professionally. Best known for her portrayal of Kate Pearson on NBC’s ‘This Is Us,’ Metz’s character dealt with similar struggles, resonating with her real-life experiences.
Her open discussion about weight and body image dates back to a 2017 interview where she pointed out societal fears surrounding fat people. She advocated for education and more open dialogues to shift perceptions.
Reflecting on her past, Metz acknowledged her battle with food issues originated long before entering Hollywood. In 2024, she recounted enduring mental and physical challenges inflicted by her stepfather, which deeply impacted her relationship with food.
Metz now sees an increased awareness around ‘food, food issues, and food behavior.’ She noted, ‘I’m trying to heal those wounds slowly but surely.’
