Christian missionaries are finding new ways to share their faith in virtual worlds. Led by organizations like Cru, they reach out through platforms such as VRChat to connect with people globally.
Adapting Evangelism to Virtual Reality
Each Friday, missionaries from Cru gather in VRChat. They enter virtual spaces filled with avatars and engage users in conversations that gradually turn to religion.
Frank Kuligowski, Cru’s digital strategist, initiated the use of VR headsets. He says choosing which virtual world to enter is key. The goal is to find groups with about 20 users for meaningful interactions.
Challenges and Criticism
This approach is not without controversy. Some VRChat users express concerns about missionaries imposing views in a platform known for its embrace of diverse gender identities. There is worry over potential anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments.
Heidi Campbell, who studies digital religion, notes that transforming digital spaces for evangelism is nothing new. It dates back to online chat rooms in the 1990s. However, critics caution against disrupting cultures unique to these spaces.
Personal Stories of Transformation
Geoffery Powell, a multimedia artist and computer scientist, first joined VRChat for its creativity. Over time, he saw underlying issues like loneliness and explicit content affecting users. He now helps Cru navigate these virtual realms.
Stewart Freeman’s story highlights the potential impact of VR-based ministry. After meeting a pastor in VRChat during a personal crisis, Freeman’s life transformed. He felt called to focus on ministry, eventually joining Cru to help others find faith.
The Future of Virtual Evangelism
As more lives play out in virtual spaces, missionaries continue adapting traditional practices. They aim to foster genuine connections and offer spiritual guidance wherever people gather—even in virtual worlds.
