Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson experienced an early setback in the 2026 NFL season. Facing the Jacksonville Jaguars, Watson committed his first turnover of the season shortly after the game began.
The Browns started with possession. Under the Florida sun, Watson advanced the ball effectively. He made successful 14-yard and 9-yard passes in his initial throws. Cleveland progressed to the Jaguars’ 33-yard line within the first four plays.
However, the drive took a turn when Watson, during a passing attempt, missed Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun in coverage. Oluokun intercepted the pass, setting the Jaguars up at their 41-yard line.
“It’s definitely not the start Watson would have hoped for.”
Fans’ reactions have been tense. Watson faced boos during preseason, leading him to express frustration. Recalling a previous injury, Watson stated in August, “It’s a disrespectful thing… Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles, and they cheered.”
Watson apologized for his comments later.
Former coach Rex Ryan criticized Watson’s continuation as the starter. On ESPN, Ryan declared, “No way would I have started him. I would have cut him.”
Such remarks added tension to the Browns’ season opener.
Backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders stands ready to step in should Watson’s struggles continue.
Following Watson’s turnover, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence capitalized with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Parker Washington, giving Jacksonville an early lead.
As the season progresses, all eyes remain on Watson and his role with the Cleveland Browns.
