The eighth week of the college football season delivered significant shifts in the AP Top 25 Poll. Despite not matching the chaos of the previous week, three Top 10 teams suffered defeats on the road.
Among the most affected was BYU, tumbling six places to No. 8 after a loss to UCF in double overtime. On the other end, Texas soared up eight positions to No. 11, following a narrow victory over Ole Miss with a score of 34-27.
Outside of Miami maintaining the No. 1 position for the second week in a row, each team in the Top 20 saw a new ranking. In a standout moment, Miami’s mascot, Sebastian the Ibis, led players with the American flag onto the field during their game against Pittsburgh at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Big 12 experienced some cannibalization, but Utah emerged strong, improving to a 7-0 record with their late victory over Houston. This result elevated them to No. 6 in the nation.
Next on their schedule is a key matchup against Cincinnati, who recently surprised No. 8 Texas Tech.
Meanwhile, Utah garnered a first-place vote in Week 8. Ohio State received ten votes, while Miami secured 59. The Big Ten and SEC each have three teams in the current Top 10. Surprisingly, UCLA and Kentucky hold No. 7 and No. 9 with just five weeks remaining in the season.
Looking ahead, the upcoming college football Saturday promises excitement. No. 3 Georgia faces No. 17 Florida in Atlanta. No. 13 Texas Tech meets No. 22 Arizona at home. No. 25 Wisconsin travels to Iowa. Additionally, No. 5 Notre Dame will play Navy in a potentially distinctive match in New England.
