Concerns Over Socialism’s Growth in American Politics
A national security expert, originally from Cuba, emphasizes the growing influence of socialism in American politics, warning it might lead to more communists in Congress. Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation who left Cuba in the 1970s, argues that the socialist threat is currently real. He describes the trend as akin to a ‘takeover’ of the Democratic Party, asserting that these changes are happening without significant resistance.
Gonzalez foresees a situation where communists might reach double-digit numbers in the House of Representatives if the current political climate persists. Such predictions are based on recent electoral successes of socialist candidates, like New York City’s election of a socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and victories by candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier over establishment Democrats.
In Seattle, socialist Katie Wilson also became mayor. Additionally, Colorado’s Melat Kiros defeated a long-standing Democratic incumbent, exemplifying the ability of socialists to unseat entrenched figures. Gonzalez notes that historical figures like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels saw no distinction between socialism and communism, and contemporary socialist candidates may hold similar views.
The success of socialist candidates is attributed to factors such as inadequate immigrant assimilation, a rise in anti-U.S. sentiment, and economic challenges in cities. Gonzalez highlights that many young White voters, often Ivy League graduates, face economic struggles, making socialist promises appealing.
Neetu Arnold, a policy analyst at the Manhattan Institute, echoes concerns about socialism’s rise across the U.S., not just in New York. She believes socialism could create more extreme politics, tapping into real frustrations without addressing underlying issues, such as housing challenges and student debt.
Arnold, an immigrant who became a U.S. citizen, hopes that both political sides recognize the threat of socialist policies to American values like merit and wealth mobility.
She stresses that socialist policies can limit opportunities and urges Democrats and Republicans to take the increase of socialism seriously.
