Congressional Democrats Probe Deportation of Military Families by Trump Administration
Congressional Democrats are investigating the Trump administration’s actions related to the deportation of military service members and their families. This follows an Associated Press report finding more than 50 active-duty troops’ family members have been detained by immigration authorities.
In a letter sent to the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Department, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, Democrats announced their intention to explore whether there is coordination between the Pentagon and DHS in deporting military families. This letter, signed by over 60 lawmakers, expressed concerns that such actions compromise military readiness, reduce morale, and break promises made to those serving the nation.
The Pentagon declined to comment but indicated it would reply to the letter directly. DHS responded by stating that military service does not automatically confer lawful immigration status nor exempt individuals from the consequences of U.S. immigration law violations. The VA did not immediately comment.
Democrats listed numerous questions for the concerned agencies in their letter, highlighting ethical and legal concerns over potential collaboration between DHS and the military to deport service members’ families. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren criticized the administration, stating, “Donald Trump is breaking our country’s promises to service members by tearing apart dozens of military families who were promised immigration protections.” Sen. Warren is spearheading the investigation, with support from Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, and several House Democrats.
The AP report notes that Trump’s administration has rolled back protections for these families, deviating from past bipartisan agreements. This has forced service members to delay deployments and take leave when spouses are detained. Lawmakers questioned why recruiters still promote immigration protections, urging a restoration of previous policies that shielded military families.
Sen. Blumenthal, a leading Democrat in the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, stated, “This report is appalling and shows the unbelievable cruelty at the center of the Trump immigration agenda.” He emphasized the need for answers and accountability.
Meanwhile, Republican chairs of relevant committees did not respond to inquiries. Trump recently formed the Military Spouse Commission to improve life for military spouses, emphasizing their importance to military readiness and success in a letter published in the Federal Register.
The Defense Department previously noted that there have been no recent policy changes regarding noncitizen family members in the military, nor has it analyzed the impact of deportations on troop readiness and morale.
Danitza James, president of Repatriate Our Patriots, lamented, “Our military service members are the ones that sign on the dotted line to go and defend our country and maybe not come back. They trust our government to take care of their families, and they’re not doing that.”
