Conservative Influencer Denies Viral Rumor of Family Ties

Conservative influencer Nick Shirley has denied a circulating claim that he is related to Tyler Robinson, who is charged with the killing of Charlie Kirk. Shirley made his family tree public to disprove this assertion.

The rumor emerged on X recently, alleging a familial connection between Shirley and Robinson. Speculation suggested Robinson’s mother is Shirley’s aunt, and that influential figures like Vice President JD Vance had given Shirley exposure after Kirk’s assassination.

Shirley, recognized as an independent journalist for exposing alleged daycare fraud in Minnesota, countered these claims. “This is completely false. Here is my family tree for proof,” he stated on X, tagging Community Notes. His family tree highlights his mother’s lineage through the Crowley family, with no mention of Robinson or his relatives.

The Community Notes label later appeared on the original post. It said Shirley’s account contradicted the claim and linked it to Grok, an AI chatbot from Elon Musk’s xAI.

The rumor seems rooted in a Grok response that circulated in screenshots on X. In one verified reply, Grok claimed Utah genealogy records indicated Robinson and Shirley shared maternal half-cousin ties. The names given in this claim, Amber Jones Robinson and Brooke T. Jones or Shirley, were absent from Shirley’s family tree.

In contrast, Grok offered varied responses. To another user, it stated no verified evidence supports the cousin claim. It described such allegations as unconfirmed, likely arising from name similarities and conjecture.

Shirley has remarked publicly, such as during his December appearance on the PBD Podcast, that he was Charlie Kirk’s last guest before the fatal shooting in Orem, Utah, on September 10. He mentioned receiving Kirk’s invitation via text the night before the incident.

Robinson, aged 22, is facing charges for Kirk’s death, with his preliminary hearing recently concluding. Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted Robinson’s family’s account of his increased political engagement and critiques of Kirk.

This false cousin narrative contributes to a wave of misinformation following Kirk’s shooting. Since September, fact-checkers have identified multiple erroneous claims about Robinson’s identity, political stance, and background.
