Controversial Ruling Allows Folarin Balogun to Play Against Belgium

Folarin Balogun was initially set to miss the U.S. Men’s National Team’s Round of 16 game against Belgium due to a red card received in a previous match. However, a last-minute decision by FIFA allowed him to participate. This decision added fuel to an already intense debate about whether Balogun deserved the red card.

Despite the controversy and Belgium’s strong opposition to FIFA’s ruling, Balogun took the field. Unfortunately for the U.S., the match ended in a 4-1 defeat, knocking them out of the World Cup. After the game, Balogun approached Belgium’s manager, Rudi Garcia. Garcia appreciated Balogun’s gesture, stating, “He came to talk to me. I really liked that. It is not his fault; he is not the one to blame.”

“I really appreciate the intention that he came to see me. I appreciate this player,” Garcia said.

The Athletic highlighted a part of FIFA’s disciplinary code which allows for the suspension of disciplinary actions under certain conditions. “The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure,” the code states.

If an individual under a suspended sanction commits a similar infringement during the probation period, the suspension is revoked, and previous sanctions are enforced anew.

Former President Donald Trump acknowledged asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino for a red card review. Trump felt it wasn’t a foul and described the incident as two athletes colliding. “I think it’s a terrible decision if they wouldn’t allow a top player to play,” Trump commented, emphasizing the importance of key players participating in crucial matches.

Balogun walked off the field following the match, and now Belgium will advance to meet Spain in their next World Cup match. Despite the efforts supporting Balogun, the U.S. team looks forward to a return in the 2032 games.
