The Michigan game against Western Michigan ended in controversy last week. Michigan won 13-12 with a Hail Mary touchdown. Referees reviewed the previous play and added a second to the game clock, causing backlash. Many criticized the Big Ten for the decision.
Urban Meyer, a college football coach, shared his thoughts on a podcast. He questioned why Western Michigan’s president attended the postgame press conference. Meyer said he wanted to hear from the athletic director, coach, and players instead. He commented, “Your heart was just taken from you.”
A day after the game, Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna and head coach Lance Taylor addressed the loss at a press conference. Kavalhuna noted a difference between the clock seen by broadcasters and reviewers. He wanted to appeal the decision but found no options available. Kavalhuna remarked on the “gut-wrenching pain” experienced by the players.
During the podcast, Meyer asked what a coach should tell their players after such a loss. He emphasized the need to “move on.” Meyer stated that Western Michigan was the better team in the game. “The reality is, Western Michigan has a really good team,” he said. “They were better on the field in Ann Arbor, especially in the second half.”
The Western Michigan Broncos aim to recover from the loss when they face Monmouth on Saturday. Meanwhile, Michigan will play against the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners.
