Controversy Erupts Over Teacher’s Comments and Yearbook Recognition
A teacher from Barrington High School in Rhode Island, Benjamin Fillo, has stirred a heated debate due to his remarks about Charlie Kirk, the late founder of Turning Point USA. Following Kirk’s assassination on September 10 during his ‘American Comeback Tour’ at Utah Valley University, Fillo called Kirk ‘garbage’ in a video, which resulted in public backlash.
Fillo’s comments included accusations that Kirk opposed LGBTQ rights and women’s rights, expressing disdain for Kirk’s rhetoric. Despite the controversy, Fillo returned to teaching on December 1, as announced by Barrington Public Schools’ interim Superintendent Bob Mitchell, after violating the district’s social media policy.
The situation intensified when Fillo was honored in the school’s 2026 yearbook. The dedication praised his teaching energy and style, stating that students were fortunate to learn from him. It was signed by ‘Karthik and Nachi on behalf of the Class of 2026.’
The spokesperson for Barrington Public Schools explained that the senior class exclusively votes on the yearbook dedication. They emphasized the importance of recognizing students’ achievements as the school year concludes.
However, parents like Heather and Jarrod Ryan expressed disappointment with the choice, criticizing the honoring of a teacher who, in their view, promoted political violence. They argued that recognition would have been more appropriate for the retiring vice principal, who had earned respect through dedicated service.
The ongoing debate reflects tensions surrounding political statements in educational settings. Fillo’s return and yearbook tribute raise questions about the boundaries of free speech for educators.
