Controversy Over District Support in Sherman Oaks
The celebration of Casa Vega Mexican restaurant in Sherman Oaks in May marked a significant moment for the establishment. An honorary sign declared its corner on Ventura Boulevard as “Casa Vega Square.” The event saw attendance from notable figures such as Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez. However, the absence of City Councilmember Nithya Raman, whose district includes Casa Vega, drew attention and criticism.
Criticism of Councilmember Raman
Critics of Raman argue that she has neglected the needs of her district. This criticism was highlighted during the mayoral election campaign, with Bass accusing Raman of being “contemptuous of her constituents” in an October debate. Raman refuted the accusation, calling it a lie. Nonetheless, some of her constituents voiced concerns about her office’s responsiveness to local issues.
Jessica Lewis, who owns a fitness studio in Sherman Oaks, expressed frustration about the lack of assistance with city services, including issues with sidewalks and homeless encampments. Despite sending emails documenting problems, Lewis felt ignored. Raman’s spokesperson, Stella Stahl, countered by saying the council office has a proactive team dedicated to listening to neighborhood concerns.
Positive Experiences
Raman also has advocates who appreciate her efforts. Marissa Rodriguez, who opened a wine shop in Studio City, credited Raman’s office for helping her navigate complex city permits. Similarly, Tyler Simmons, owner of a coffee wine bar, commended Raman’s team for installing speed tables to address speeding issues in his neighborhood.
Business Concerns and Support
Casa Vega owner Christy Vega shared her dissatisfaction with Raman’s office, citing unresolved issues like sidewalk repairs and safety concerns for her employees. Vega raised concerns about communication problems and said she felt urged to move to another district when seeking solutions.
Additionally, Christy Vega supported Bass and engaged with her after her mayoral win to address district concerns. Bass and Councilmember Rodriguez assisted Vega with permitting for her restaurant’s outdoor patio.
Sophia Brodetsky, owner of Valley Inn restaurant, also experienced issues but found Bass’s office more receptive than Raman’s.
District Conflicts
According to Lewis and Vega, business owners met with Bass to discuss Raman’s district leadership. Weekly safety meetings between business owners and officials, facilitated by Bass, were convened to address pressing concerns. Despite previous endorsements, Lewis voiced disappointment over Bass’s support for Raman during her reelection and expressed a reluctant vote for Bass, citing challenges in maintaining her business.
The contentious environment between local businesses and district representatives reflects broader challenges and frustrations, with constituents feeling caught in a web of blame between various offices.
